Regular Senior Exams Help Diagnose & Treat Diseases Common to Aging Pets

From dogs and cats to exotic and pocket pets, we give special attention to aging companion animals. The professional team at Crescenta Valley Veterinary Hospital puts the focus on preventive measures and the early detection and treatment of age-related problems.

Older pet patients commonly experience the same problems that older humans do. Together, we develop a health care plan aimed at extending the years and enhancing the quality of life for your aging friend.

Changes in Senior Pets

It’s easy to spot outward signs of aging, such as a slower pace, but a pet’s insides are also changing. An older pet is more likely to develop age-related medical concerns such as arthritis, cancer, or diseases of the heart, kidney, and liver.

Senior pets may lose some of their sight and hearing as they age, or they may not respond well to voice commands. Your aging pet may avoid playing and running, or may find daily activities difficult such as jumping up on his or her favorite chair or into the family car, and he or she may have arthritis.

Behavior changes in older pets can serve as the first indicators of aging. Some signs of cognitive dysfunction or senility in pets include the sudden or gradual development of the following behaviors:

  • Grouchy or irritable
  • Elimination accidents
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Unresponsive to voice commands
  • Wandering
  • Changes in sleep patterns

These changes might be due to discomfort or pain, sight or hearing loss, or even cognitive dysfunction.

Treating Senior Pets

Regular exams, performed twice annually by our veterinarians, along with lab work and diagnostic testing, will help determine the cause of such changes in aging pets. We offer a variety of therapies for senior pets to help manage chronic pain, cancer, behavioral concerns, and diseases of the eyes, endocrine system, and heart.

Regular care and support help pet owners make the senior years with their loyal companion healthier and more rewarding. Contact our hospital to schedule a senior exam for your special pet.
